For outdoor enthusiasts, winter is a good time to get into the field and see birds and other wildlife. At Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, guided birding tours are held all winter.

Tours on the refuge Wildlife Drive are led by experienced birders. Bild walks and other tours are held at various times throughout the year. Dates of upcoming bird tours can be found on the Friends of Blackwater events page.

Blackwater NWR birding tours meet at 8:00 am at the Blackwater Visitor Center, 2145 Key Wallace Drive, Cambridge, Maryland. Tours may last 3-4 hours.

Birding tours caravan by car to birding hotspots around the Wildlife Drive, with walking stops along the way. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather. No fee or registration required for birding tours.

The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm; closed Mondays and federal holidays. Wildlife Drive and trails are open daily, dawn to dusk.

Located near Cambridge Maryland, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the largest breeding populations of bald eagles in the United States. Blackwater NWR holds an Eagle Festival annually in March.
