The Chesapeake Bay Trust recently announced $514,000 in grants awarded to 85 organizations and schools throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  The awards, approved by the board of trustees, will be made through the Trust’s Restoration, Outreach and Community Engagement, and Mini Grants programs and will fund projects and programs that create habitat, improve water quality, and engage students and communities in restoration and environmental education projects.

In this round of applications, the Trust will be funding a variety of projects, including those under a new “behavior change” track of the Outreach and Community Engagement grant program. These grants will not only educate communities on their environmental impact, but seek to influence and augment behavior in beneficial ways to improve local communities and the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to the Outreach and Community Engagement grant program, the Trust’s board also approved grants designed to advance Bay restoration efforts and environmental education.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust directs its grant dollars as focused as possible with fully 90 cents of every dollar received going directly to support on the ground projects and educational programs.  For the tenth consecutive year, the Trust has received a “Four-Star Rating” from Charity Navigator, the nation’s leading independent evaluator of non-profits organizations, placing the organization in the top 1 percent of charities nationwide.

Grants funded through the Restoration Grant Program: Nine grants totaling $250,000 awarded to the Chesapeake Bay Ecological Foundation, Canaan Valley Institute, Port Tobacco River Conservancy, Town of Cecilton, Civic Works, Boy Scouts of America Venturing Crew 202, Cylburn Arboretum Association, London Town Foundation, and the Chesapeake Wildlife Heritage.

Grants funded through the Outreach and Community Engagement Program: Six grants totaling $104,106 awarded to Nature Abounds, Izaak Walton League of America, Alice Ferguson Foundation, University of Maryland for Environmental Science (two grants), and the Chesapeake Covenant Community

Grants funded through the Mini Grant Program: 70 grants totaling $159,659 awarded to schools and community groups across the state.
