James Island is located in the middle Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Choptank River. Once nearly gone, efforts are underway to restore the island.

Work at James Island is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mid-Chesapeake Bay Island Ecosystem Restoration project. The project is focused on restoring and expanding island habitats through the beneficial use of dredged material.

The Mid-Bay project includes restoration of 2,072 acres of lost remote island habitat on James Island and 72 acres of remote island habitat on Barren Island.
