common tern

The common tern is recognized by its contrasting black and white plumage, red bill, and sharp call. On the Chesapeake Bay, flocks of terns are often seen diving to catch baitfish which have been driven to the surface by striped bass or other gamefish.

In the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the common tern is known to nest together with least tern tern on Popular Island.
