The City of Hampton will receive $389,400 from Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality for the Lynnhaven lake retrofit, a project designed to help reduce pollution from stormwater runoff in the Lynnhaven Lake area near Peninsula Town Center.
The money is part of $8.5 million that was available statewide for stormwater projects that will have the greatest financial and environmental benefit on local communities. Work on the retrofit is expected to start this fall or winter at a total cost of $778,800.
The Lynnhaven Lake drainage area includes 130 acres of residential and forested areas. The water runs into Newmarket Creek, a branch of the Back River and then into the Lower Chesapeake Bay.
The goal of the retrofit is to remove nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment from the untreated stormwater runoff to help meet pollution goals for the Bay set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The retrofit should also increase the amount of floodwater that can be stored during heavy rains and storms.
